Efficient preventative care is key to having a healthy smile. Consistent checkups will allow our team to diagnose oral cancer, gum disease, and tooth decay before they spread and become a problem. Preventive oral health, typically focuses on techniques in oral hygiene. We provide three type of services to our patients.
1) Preventive services to promote and maintain good oral health.
2) Educational services to help patients develop behaviors that promote better oral health and help them understand the importance of practicing these behaviors.
3) The third type of service provided in therapeutic services, which are treatments meant to stop disease and maintain healthy tissues in the mouth.
Common procedures performed include:
- Cleanings Known as prophylaxis: involves the removal of dental plaque from teeth with the intention of preventing cavities (dental caries), gingivitis and periodontal disease. People routinely clean their own teeth by brushing and flossing and we can remove hardened deposits (tartar) not removed by routine cleaning. Profesional cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
- Scaling and root planning for patients with periodontal disease: known as deep cleaning is to remove or eliminate the etiologic agents which cause inflammation: dental plaque, its products and calculus, thus helping to establish a periodontium that is free of disease.
- Plaque: Plaque is a soft, sticky mixture of bacteria and some food debris. It irritates the gums and causes inflammation over time: gingivitis. The longer plaque is left on the teeth it hardens into calculus (tartar).Calculus is mineralized plaque and does not come off with the brush and floss anymore. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more serious disease called periodontists. The most common treatment for periodontists is scaling and root planning. Ultrasonic scalers and hand scalers are used for scaling and root planning. Home care and periodontal maintenance therapy ar highly recommended to prevent reinfection with periodontal pathogens, usually every three - four month to sustain health.
